Again, the stock Ultra/750-8X outperforms the MSI Ti4200-8X card, while the overclocked Ultra/750-8X blasts away even the Ti4600 card. The last and latest Direct3D benchmark is Epic's Unreal Tournament 2003, which is a very popular game but is quite a resource hog. First, the Flyby test:

No surprises here, this benchmark confirms what the previous tests have shown. The Botmatch test, besides stressing the video card, it also stresses the CPU and RAM:

My comments are not necessary anymore, same situation as in all previous tests. After the D3D test, it is time for an OpenGL benchmark. Since Quake3 is getting quite old now and the number of FPS displayed by the game are getting ridiculously high, I had to use another game based on an improved Quake3 engine. Jedi Knight 2 has replaced Q3 as the main OpenGL benchmark. So I used the maximum quality at 1024x768x32 and 1600x1200x32 resolutions. Because after installing the 1.04 patch there is no demo available in the game, I created my own demo and ran the bench using it.

As you can see, using OpenGL API the cards perform the same as in DirectX tests. What amazes me is the fact that JK2 is quite playable in 1600x1200, but then again I didn't use any sound card, which may explain the very high FPS. I did not run tests with AntiAliasing and Anisotropic Filtering enabled because none of today's cards can really sustain a good FPS while such options are enabled. Maybe the Radeon 9700/Pro can handle AA and AF, but with the GF4 series you will notice a major performance drop.
But all the above tests show that the new Gainward GeForce4 PowerPack! Ultra/750-8X XP Golden Sample is a fast Ti4200-8X card, a bit faster than most other cards using the same chip. The killer performance, outstanding overclockability and rich bundle makes the Gainward GeForce4 PowerPack! Ultra/750-8X XP Golden Sample the ultimate GeForce4 Ti4200 card, pure and simple.
It has a lot of nice feature, such as VIVO up to 1280x1024 resolution, comes with a bundled PCI FireWire card, but the most important feature of all is the design of the card itself. Kudos to Gainward engineers for designing the 8 layer PCB for this card, which not only performs better that standard Ti4200-8X cards, but also overclocks a lot better. Ti4600 speeds are easy to reach, and even more. The card has such an overclocking potential that not even some Ti4600 cards have.
Pros
- Good performance
- Outstanding overclockability
- PCI FireWire card included
- Rich software bundle
- VIVO up to 1280x1024
- Red PCB looks awesome
Cons
It's hard to find anything wrong with this card, except for the price. The Ultra/750-8X XP GS is a wolf trying to pass as a sheep, because if you think that all cards based on GeForce4 Ti4200 are value cards, then you're in for a surprise. Thanks for reading and enjoy the site!
