Thanks to Logisys Computer for the product sample.
Speakers are often overlooked when shopping for a new PC. Most budget users will settle for any $10 pair. And most buyers certainly don't have the proper audio equipment (i.e. sound card) to take advantage of the full frequency range offered by high end speaker setups, let alone properly reproduce extreme highs and lows found in symphonic music. On the other hand, these same budget buyers primarily want acceptable gaming audio, DVD playback, and an enjoyable listening experience. Current onboard audio solutions and sub-$100 speakers can offer just that.

With that, Logisys sent over one of their 2.1 speaker systems, model SP6001BK. As you may have guessed, this is an all-black setup. An identical white version is also available, model SP6001WT. Our system came in the retail box shown above, extremely well packaged between two molded styrofoam pieces. The box is surprisingly massive for a 2.1 setup. Then again, I've grown accustomed to my Harman Kardon HK-695 speakers and sub, all of which are incredibly small given their performance.

As it turns out, the setup is more than just a pair of speakers and a sub. Unlike other systems which have a built-in amplifier, Logisys' solution calls for a separate amp that also handles the power, master volume, treble, and bass levels. It's also the converging point for all the wires which helps with cable management. The specs for the speakers are:
- Power Output: (Woofer) 16W RMS
(Satellite) 12W x2 RMS
- Frequency Response: (Woofer) 30Hz-20Hz
(Satellite) 120Hz-20KHz
- Sensitivity Input: 300mV
- Distortion: 0.3% at 1W 1 KHz
- S/N Ratio: more than 65dB
- Separation: more than 40dB
- Driver Unit: (Woofer Driver) 4" magnetically shielded
(Satellite Driver) 2.5" magnetically shielded
- Audio Input Socket: (input 1) 3.5m stereo plug
(Input 2) RCA plug
- Audio Output Socket: RCA socket
- Product Size (LxWxH): (Amplifier) 201x72x212mm
(Woofer Speaker) 205x190x195mm
(Satellite Speaker) 160x160x305mm
Coming in at under $50, this system is competitively priced with Logitech's X-230 (32W total output) and Z-3 speakers (40W total output). 12W per satellite is pretty good for low-end speakers. Another 16W for the sub and you get a total of 40W. The advantage these speakers have over most 2.1 systems are the RCA audio plugs which let you connect them to a television set, DVD player, pretty much anything that accepts said input. Needless to say, this makes them a lot more useful.

The box's size wasn't there for kicks; the system is pretty large. The satellites alone are over a foot tall as witnessed in the above photo (and yes, Pepsi > Coke). There's a plastic grill over the speaker's drivers which can be pulled out for cleaning. The drivers themselves are fairly small so I'm not sure why such tall satellites are necessary (other than for looks). The base can be removed by taking out the three screws which secure it. You'll need a decent amount of desktop space to set these up, as the diameter of the base is about an inch greater than that of a typical CD.
