Thanks to TwinMOS for the product sample.

Flash memory cards are becoming more and more widespread these days. I am sure most of you are already somewhat familiar with these cards, you either use them in your cell phone, your digital camera or in your PDA. Modern cell phones can store phone books, images, and even MP3 music on flash memory, but this is an optional features for most models. On the other hand, PDAs and digital cameras require flash memory for storing information and pictures, so if you own such a device you'll definitely need to use a memory card.

Compact Flash, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, Smart Media, Memory Stick or MicroDrive; there are a lot of formats for flash memory and they are all used in certain devices. But with all these formats, having two devices that use different formats can become quite a hassle when you need to transfer the data from the memory to the computer and vice-versa. For this purpose, there's an interesting device called a flash card reader/writer. TwinMOS 7-in-1 USB card Reader/Writer, is, like the name suggests, a reader/writer for flash cards that connects to the PC via the USB port.

The manufacturer of this device is TwinMOS, a company that has become quite well known among computer enthusiasts lately. Their PC3200 or DDR400 RAM is very popular these days due to its low price, good performance and the fact that it overclocks really well. But we are not here to talk about the TwinMOS RAM, we have done that in another article some time ago. The 7-in-1 USB card reader/writer is, like the name says, capable of reading and writing seven different types of flash memory cards. The specs, according to the TwinMOS site, are:
  • USB Mass Storage Class Devices
  • Supports CompactFlash Type I/II / Microdrive / SmartMedia / MultiMediaCard / Secure Digital / Memory Stick
  • USB bus powered, no external power needed
  • Embedded USB cable
  • All four memory slots are active, which allows to copy data among different memory cards
  • Five LEDs operating status confirmation
  • Drivers free for Windows XP, ME, and Mac 10.1.2 or above
  • Cross platform: Windows XP/ 2000/ ME/ 98 SE/ 98, and Mac OS 8.6 or above
  • Dimensions: 96mm(L)x63mm(W)x13mm(H)
  • Weight: 55g
According to these specs, the drive can actually read all card formats available today, except for the new Memory Stick Pro, which has just recently been launched, and xD Picture Card, which is a proprietary Fuji format and it is only used in the latest Fuji cameras. The product comes in a clear plastic pack, making it easy to spot in a retail store:

Unfortunately, this box does not protect the product very well during transport. The box in which the test drive came was quite damaged, but fortunately the stuff inside was intact. Opening the box, although not a very easy task, reveals the very nice drive and all the other accessories:

TwinMOS supplies a driver CD for installing the card reader in Windows 98 and Windows 2000 (Windows ME and XP do not need drivers as they recognize the card reader with out any problems), an installation manual, which is very useful, and a USB cable. The drive itself is quite small and light, with a nice dark gray color:

It looks rather stylish to me, and I must admit it blends very nicely with almost any desktop. There are five functional LEDs which indicate if the device is powered and which slots are occupied.
