Thanks to Seasonic for the product sample.

I've wanted to get one of these forever and just in time Seasonic released their newest doodad, the PowerAngel power monitor. As the name implies, this simple to use contraption monitors energy usage in a variety of ways. Its primary purpose (according to Seasonic) is to optimize power usage in the workplace whether it's a small business, a factory or an enthusiast's basement. Though it's not a product for everyone, die hard techies and IT workers alike will find this tool quite useful.

The PowerAngel comes in a retail package as seen above and includes no mechanical parts (save the buttons). Inside is a foldout manual with some technical explanations that can be quite handy so when you cut up the packaging make sure not to damage the leaflet. The unit itself is pretty simple: it's basically a pass-through 3-prong adapter with an LCD screen with buttons that switch between functions and it provides power usage readouts.

The front has a well protected LCD screen and five buttons for displaying voltage, current, wattage, frequency, power factor, power usage over time, etc. The rear has a 3-prong plug that goes into the wall. As a whole the unit is very lightweight yet sturdy and durable so it should be able to take a bit of a beating as can be expected from tools used in the industry. Of course I wouldn't expect anything less from a device costing around $35. Here's some additional information on the unit:

Features:
  • Helps forecast and manage your electric bill.
  • Monitors AC power quality to protect sensitive instruments.
  • Choose the correct Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) based on the real VA of your equipment.
  • Pocket-sized, light and stylish design.
  • Use it anywhere with any 120V AC appliance.
  • Easy-to-see large LCD display.
  • Single-press buttons for all functions.
  • Plug it into the AC outlet, plug in the appliance and start monitoring immediately.
  • 8 power measurement functions.
  • High power capacity to use with devices up to 1875 watts at 125 volts.
  • Suitable for home, school, office or even factory.
Specifications:
  • Dimension: 133.6 (L) x 70.0 (W) x 39.6 (H) mm
  • Weight: 130 grams
  • Approvals: ETL for US and Canada
  • Model number: SSM-1508RA
  • AC Input: 115 V, 50/60 Hz
  • Maximum Voltage: 125 V, 50/60 Hz
  • Maximum Current: 15 A
  • Maximum Power: 1875 VA
  • Accuracy: 2%
  • Warranty: 6 months
  • Power Consumption: 10 W max.
  • Operating environment: 0~40°C, 80% relative humidity
Being able to support 1875watts makes the PowerAngel a versatile tool as you can plug it into almost any electrical appliance. If the current throughput exceeds the rated 15 amps the LCD screen starts flashing and the unit beeps. As for the accuracy spec I'm assuming they mean it's 98% accurate, not 2%.
