Actiontec GT704-WGR Wireless Modem PDF Print E-mail

Depending on your provider you may have different instructions, but there is a basic setup for the most common providers. The features included are very standard for routers nowadays, including 256-bit WEP, MAC address cloning, and internet activity logging.

A lot of the option screens do not need to be touched by the average user, but are greatly appreciated by advanced users.  As for the wireless connectivity, the router is 802.11g compliant and as a modem the Actiontec GT704 promises speeds up to 7Mbps. Unfortunately, I don’t have a connection quite that fast, but the modem does feel up to speed and delivers downloads up to speeds limited by my connection rather than the equipment. A few tests taken during peak hours (7:30PM PDT) from Speed Test reveal the following:

Seattle (Nearest Server)
Download Speed to: 1315 kbps
Upload Speed: 635 kbps

New York City (Farthest Server)
Download Speed: 1316 kbps
Upload Speed: 363 kbps

While this is more a test of my internet connection than the router, this does show that the modem can deliver some speed. Now for a transfer between two computers on the network (using Rendezvous):

12MB file:  15 Seconds, approximately 800KBps average speed
315MB file: 7:24, approximately 725KBps average speed

With an 802.11b and 802.11g device on the transfer, the speeds were limited by the 802.11b device. However the device performed pretty well, especially because the test was performed in a high-density apartment complex with up to 10 or more other networks in the area. Although the transfer speeds were not at the theoretical maximum of 802.11b (11Mbps, or 1375KBps), they were very fast.

Pros
  • Easy setup
  • Advanced options
  • Fast speeds for networks transfers and internet traffic
Cons
  • Generic looking
Overall, the Actiontec GT704-WGR is a great device, especially for new users looking to set up a wireless network and purchase a DSL connection. It is easy to set up for new users and has all the features an advanced user could need. The speeds of the modem are very fast and the wireless connection is completely reliable, even with many competing devices in the area. If you are looking for a DSL gateway and a wireless router you should give the GT704-WGR serious consideration. Although the price may seem steep (US $89.99 at most retail locations) you can usually get it for cheap to free if you sign up for DSL service at the store or purchase the product online.
