It's no secret that an overwhelming majority of computer enthusiasts also happen to be gamers. After all, what good is the latest $500 video card if all you're doing is watching movies? Most of you have no doubt heard of FEAR, though some have not. It's not the newest game out there (in fact it was released in 2005), but it continues to be one of the most successful first person shooters of all time. Created by Sierra and Monolith, FEAR has been called by many the best FPS game/expansion of the past two years. This isn't a review per se, but rather an experience with the game and a look at what makes it great. Beware of spoilers.

Half Life 2, Doom 3, and Farcry all set the stage for modern first person shooters in terms of graphics and gameplay. These were the benchmarks by which all other games were measured. Sure there were fun, mass destruction alternatives (Serious Sam anyone?), but from a purely visual perspective these reigned supreme. In this regard, FEAR doesn't disappoint. A budget system (circa $500) with a $100-150 video card will be more than capable of running the game with all the eye candy at a decent resolution (1280x1024 and up). And what eye candy it is.

Explosions, fire, even random orbs of whatever make you pause and go "wow" several times over.

Throughout the game it's difficult not to see the correlations between FEAR and its predecessors. It's almost deja-vu at certain times. For one thing, you'll spend most of the game with your flashlight on. It's a dark experience and with all the blood and bones, very akin to Doom 3.
