The Extreme chips have unlocked multipliers. The 6600 and 6700 have a locked multiplier and so can only be overclocked by increasing the motherboard bus speed. Fortunately, these chips aren't the new breed with a 1333MHz stock bus speed; their bus is "only" 1066MHz by default, which on a motherboard that can handle 1333MHz-plus-a-bit turns out to give a decent amount of overclocking headroom.
He then dropped the notebook. That gave us a real shock as it was unexpected and the notebook hit the floor real hard. You would have expected the hard drive to literally die from the shock right there and then. In fact, Kobayashi-san himself thought he killed the notebook since it did not respond after the drop.
Core 2 family comes in three flavors: Core 2 Duo, which replaces Pentium 4 and Pentium D, Core 2 Quad, which is a quad-core Core 2 Duo, and Core 2 Extreme, which replaces Pentium Extreme Edition. The difference between Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme is that the last one runs at higher clock rates and has its clock multiplier unlocked, which allows you to overclock the CPU by changing the CPU clock multiplier. Some Core 2 Extreme models have four CPU cores, as you will see on the next page.
If you’re still using your desk or a freebie mouse pad and wondering why to choose a decent mouse pad, this review is probably for you. Today I have the little-known Nuke Z’s mouse pad; the Nuke Z Z8 low sensitivity.
What’s even more amazing is that it’s not just an update of the previous model; it’s a completely new camera from top to bottom. Even the shape of it is different. Where the S5600 appeared to be modelled on a full-sized SLR, the shape of the S5700 is a lot closer to that of previous Fuji super-zoom cameras such as the popular S7000Z or the S20 Pro. Measuring 106.1 x 75.7 x 80.7mm and weighing 306g minus batteries it is it is significantly smaller and lighter than the S5600, but it has a larger and even more comfortable handgrip, and manages to fit in a much larger monitor screen. It’s a nice screen too; with 230k pixels it’s a lot sharper than the old one, and it has a nice anti-glare finish too. It’s also slightly recessed so it doesn’t pick up too many finger marks.
s thing has more ports on it than a Federation Starbase. Front and back it's loaded with the typical ports plus a number of audio and video ports you typically won't find (at least not front and back). This fits well with the “TV PC” name of the system - and the fact that it comes with a remote. There is an additional “media drive bay” port in the front of the system. This a slot for an HP personal media drive. Basically, this is an external USB 120-400GB drive that will work on this machine as an internal drive. Then you can use that drive on another PC via USB. Nice touch, but we were disappointed that you have to buy the drive separately and only from HP. No thanks for now - maybe later.
Installing the XFX GeForce Fatal1ty 8600 GT video card was as easy as the 7600 GT. The XFX GeForce Fatal1ty 8600 GT is also of the same small size. This makes installation in cases that don’t have a lot of space, very easy. The driver disk provided with the video card by XFX, includes a relatively current version, but as you enthusiasts and gamers know it is almost always better to use the latest version found on either nVIDIA’s or on XFX’s website. Installation and detection went off without a hitch and I was up and running in under 15 minutes from start to finish.
The system we are looking at is relatively maxed out, even for a T61p. The big upgrades include the top-of-the-line processor (instead of a T7500 or T7300), the 100GB 7200RPM disk (instead of something slower or smaller) and the 1920x1200 display (an upgrade from 1680x1050). With 2GB of RAM and Nvidia Quadro FX 570M graphics and those options the T61p has considerable power for a mobile system. Other possible upgrades include a 160GB FDE (encrypted) hard drive, up to 4GB of RAM, A/B/G/N wireless, and on-board WWAN, and UWB.
Intel decided to drop chipset-based PATA (IDE) support with the introduction of the ICH8 southbridge. ICH9R continues the theme and motherboard manufacturers have had to integrate a discrete controller to keep most folks happy. MSI goes with a hybrid Marvell controller that provides 2-channel ATA133 and a single SATA2 port. We note, however, that optical drives cannot be accessed under DOS, so any disk-imaging software reliant upon it will not work.
The 2GB kit we received was shipped in Crucial's standard cardboard packaging that they use for shipping their memory. The modules were individually wrapped in anti-static bags so nothing could happen to them during shipping and delivery. The modules themselves were secured between two cardboard cut-outs and suspended in the middle of the box. The package contents included two 1GB memory modules and an installation manual.
