A possible solution to many of the problems with the UMPC, especially the ones that deal with slow performance, is to use Linux on the device. We already know, from examples like Nokia's N800, that a Linux-based operating system can do wonders on a low-power device but as Microsoft was a major player behind the original "Origami" project and manufacturers have been slow to give a lighter weight, more open OS a try. Some projects are already getting going on this, like Intel's MID or the reported system from TVease but we have yet to see something that is readily available.
The copper base on the sample we received showed some machining marks from the build. To the touch these marks are almost unnoticeable, however we'd like to see all manufacturers add a polishing step to their finishing process. As showed time and time again by enthusiasts that lap the contact surface area of their cooler a few degrees of cooling improvement will generally be gained.
Rather than using a textured paint, I went with the normal airbrushing techniques on the mouse and keyboard. This way, they'd be left with their familiar feel instead of the texture. To do the stitching, I whipped out my handy Dremel and cut on the lines. The scoring leaves enough of a sensation to show it hasn't been glossed over but isn't too distracting.
Cooler Master did well with the Aquagate S1 packaging. In addition to the window in the front, there is a carrying handle and the top of the box simply flips up to reveal the contents. The back of the box lists specs and features. Inside, two pieces of plastic hold the contents in place to avoid any damage during shipping. This kit is designed to install inside the case, either on the rear or side panel in place of a 120mm exhaust fan. The radiator assembly's dimensions are about 6.2 x 5 x 3.5 inches.
The number of black components on a Ballistix Tracer 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. Ballistix 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins. The notch in a 240-pin DDR2 DIMM is closer toward the center of the module.
The Cube Station CS407 is equipped with an embedded operating system and 128 MB of RAM. It uses the Ext3 file system and supports single volumes, RAID 0, 1 or 5. It supports both Apple and Windows, and features a built-in FTP server, an iTunes server, a multimedia server, a print server, Active Directory Services support, and even a USB hub. The CS407 also includes a few extras which might just push the it ahead of the others in this arena. These extras include a photo-sharing service, a BitTorrent client and a backup utility. Each of these I put through their paces to see if they add irreplaceable functionality or if they are just flashy baubles.
Each type of panel has different characteristics that are desirable and, as you get cheaper, undesirable. When you read the marketing specs or characteristics of an LCD panel, rarely will they divulge the panel type, which is arguably the most important thing to know.
Normally there aren't a lot of goodies that ship with a headset, but Icemat has done a good job of providing you with a few accessories to get you going in different situations. The package includes the In:Ear earphones, a uni-directional microphone, two extra sets of silicon earpieces (four total), a handy microphone/headphone extension cord as well as a small carrying bag to protect your investment.
Taking a closer look at the 120mm NF-S12-1200, we can see the noticeably different blade design. The fins are more vertical in the center and curve out from there. It's a different designed blade but one that is supposedly able to move a significant amount of air.
When they arrived to me I let him check them out and he screamed 'duckie', and then when he found out what they did he was even more excited. He couldn't wait till bath time to play with them, from the time I let him have them he didn't put them down, even undressing for his first bath with the ducks, they were sitting on the floor next to him. Once he was undressed he ran into the bathroom and threw them into the tub, I couldn't get the him in fast enough....
