Toshiba TransMemory 2GB USB Flash Drive PDF Print E-mail

The Corsair drive wins hands down. Still, 12.5MB/s is decent for a typical USB drive.

Same story on the access times. 9.2ms is a bit slow for a USB drives, as some hard drives are now reaching access times this low. It also makes the drive essentially useless for ReadyBoost.

Here the Toshiba drive comes out on top. 3ms is on par with other drives. Surprisingly the Voyager GT uses a lot more.

Again Corsair wins. 11.8MB/s is a decent speed. Not excitingly fast, but not "what's wrong with this thing" slow.

Finally the Voyager GT absolutely dominates, writing data almost 4 times as fast. 5.2MB/s on the Toshiba drive is a bit slow. I'll admit this is more of a normal apple vs. elite apple comparison (and the difference is certainly reflected in price), but it helps to see exactly how good the "best of the best" really is in order to get a better understanding of what to expect from the mainstream. But do you really need a fast USB drive? Unless you're using it on a daily basis or taking advantage of ReadyBoost, no. Something that works, doesn't cost an organ, and looks tolerable without being huge will suffice.

Pros
  • Complete package
  • Nice design
  • Cool blue LED
  • Very small
  • Cover (loosely) snaps onto the back of the drive for storage
  • Cheap! ($22)
Cons
  • Mediocre speed (slow access and write times)
  • Plastic rather than metal rim/ring
Overall Toshiba's TransMemory drive is a good product. It's nice looking, small, and gets the job done. $22 won't get you top of the line, so consider this on your next purchase. You can get yours here. Conversely, if you want blazing speed you should explore other options. Feel free to comment on this review here. Thanks for reading and enjoy the site!
