Cooler Master ARC-U01 & CRC-U01 Ramsinks PDF Print E-mail

Thanks to Cooler Master for the product sample.

I'm pretty sure that if you're into computers, you must have heard about CoolerMaster. CM is a company very well known for the high quality of their products, and like most companies in the IT industry, they are based in Taiwan. CoolerMaster were among the first companies to produce aluminum computer cases, and they still make some of the best aluminum cases I've ever seen. They also were among the first to use the so called "heat-pipe" technology in their coolers. Today, CoolerMaster is one of those companies that have a lot of products for the hardware enthusiast and overclockers alike.

Ranging from aluminum cases, LED fans, to hard drive and even chipset coolers, CoolerMaster's product line has become quite popular these days. CoolerMaster also has a retail product division, which is marketing new products and product kits for the end-users. The latest of these product kits are the CoolerMaster ramsinks reviewed here today. With RAM speeds increasing almost on a daily basis, with faster and faster video cards being launched almost every day, those little memory chips on a RAM module or on a graphics card get hotter and hotter. Not counting the overclocking, because then we really get into a long discussion ;-)

Named ARC-U01 and CRC-U01, these are the latest CoolerMaster kits, which include 8 separate ramsinks made of copper or aluminum. ARC-U01 designates the aluminum sinks, while CRC-U01 is the name of the copper sinks kit. Each of the sinks measures 22x8x5 (mm) and has pre-attached thermal conductive double sided adhesive tape, so the installation is quite a breeze. The ARC-U01 are, as I said, the aluminum ramsinks. They come in a Perspex formed package, which is a very good idea considering the customer usually likes to see the actual product before making a purchase.

Don't let the picture fool you, the actual RAM module is just printed on the cardboard ;-) In case you haven't counted, there are 8 sinks in the pack, which means you can use these on a RAM module with 8 chips on it (usually ones that have chips on one side only), or on the memory chip of a graphics card (usually there are 8 memory chips on modern graphics cards). But it makes quite an impression and it gives you a clear idea what the product is used for. On the back of the box there are the installation instructions, with pictures. CRC-U01 are almost the same as ARC-U01, the only major difference is that they are made out of pure copper. The box is almost identical to the one used on the ARC-U01.

Same looks, same installation instructions, different sinks. The chip coolers or ramsinks look almost identical; they have the same size and the same number (five) of fins.

The aluminum version has a nicer profile, as aluminum is easier to model into shape, but that shouldn't make any difference. On the back side of each chip, CoolerMaster has pre-applied double-sided thermal conductive adhesive tape, which not only keeps the sink attached to the memory chip or whatever it is attached to, but also acts as a thermal interface material. So the heat from the part that you need cooled will be transferred to the sink with the aid of this adhesive tape. Here are all 16 ram sinks in a group picture.

These nice heatsink-shaped little pieces of metal have more than one application. The most obvious use is to cool down the memory chips on a memory module, like so:
