Logitech MX510 Optical Mouse PDF Print E-mail

Thanks to eWaggle for the product sample.

Logitech never ceases to amaze me. Ever since the First Wheel Mouse I've been hooked. I'm particularly big on ergonomics (which explains why I still use my grimy hand-salsa'd finger-polished Microsoft Elite keyboard) so when I saw one of my classmates using an MX510 I knew I had to get one. Just to be like the cool kids. Of course he had a Mac, but that's forgivable. The point is, after years of using random Logitech products I've yet to be let down. A few months ago I got to test drive the MX310 and have been using it non-stop until now.

The MX510 arrived in a very attractive retail package, typical of Logitech. Opening the box and the plastic shell therein provides access to the included items. Aside from the mouse (which is USB native but includes a PS/2 connector just in case) you get a mini catalog, a foldout installation manual (in the event that you can't locate the only green colored PS/2 port), and a driver CD. Apparently I got recently boxed sample because the included MouseWare drivers are version 9.80, which corresponds to the latest release on Logitech's website.

This is by far the best looking mouse I've seen. It's not overly flashy and doesn't have distracting LEDs. As a matter of fact, the optical LED is hidden so well that once the mouse is on a surface, you can't tell if it's lit even with the lights off. The MX510 comes in either dark blue or dark red. The top has a very peculiar holographic effect which gives the impression of folded fabric beneath the seemingly clear surface. Because this is a random design, no two mice are the same. Even more interesting is the lack of buttons; the single top piece is so well built that you can click on the left side without ever disturbing the right. This gives the impression of two separate buttons, but better since your hand never leaves the surface.

Along the top middle is the required scroll wheel with two very useful Cruise Control buttons above and below it. When scrolling through websites or long documents, after you reach a certain point you have to raise your finger and move it to the top (or bottom) of the wheel to continue scrolling. With these buttons, you simply let your finger slide in the direction it was moving. It will then land on one of these buttons which will continue scrolling in the same direction. After becoming so accustomed to the typical, less effective method of scrolling, switching to Logitech's elaborate approach takes time but once you've tried it, there's no going back.

Below that is the application switch which is Logitech's approach to the famous alt-tab method. I've yet to use it (then again, I don't use alt-tab much either). All of the buttons are programmable and you're provided with a sizable list of options. The flipside features a semi-transparent cover over the electronics. The red LED that's used is very large and blindingly bright, so don't stare at it. For gliding, 5 slick feet are used. There's still no reference to teflon on Logitech's website, but the general consensus is that they use it on their mice feet.

Unlike the ambidextrous MX310, the MX510 is geared towards right hand users exclusively. It is therefore asymmetrical, but with good reason. After having used a few dozen mice over the years, this is a near perfect fit. The black siding is best described as "rubbery plastic". It's not as soft as rubber, but it provides a lot more grip than typical plastic. In addition to the top buttons, there are two forward/back navigation buttons on the left side. While this entire arrangement takes a few hours to get used to, I found the layout to be extremely clever and very handy. These forward/back buttons are easily accessible, but not intrusive so you won't accidentally hit them (this was my biggest gripe with Microsoft's IntelliMouse Optical which prompted me to disable them altogether).
