ATake EasyView 4 Port USB KVM Switch PDF Print E-mail

Thanks to Wisetech for the product sample.

With the overall cost of computers constantly dropping, it's not uncommon for normal users (let alone professionals and enthusiasts) to own more than one computer. If you have several machines in relative proximity, controlling each one via separate keyboards, mice, and monitors can be a pain, one that consumes valuable space as well. The solution is a KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switch. Although the technology has been around for about a decade, it didn't find its way into homes until recently.

A KVM is essentially a box with a series of input ports, all connecting to their respective computers. A single monitor, keyboard, and mouse are used to control all the connected machines. Not only does this reduce cable clutter, but saves a lot of space and prevents you from having to move between stations. Although most people still have little use for a KVM, for some it's a lifesaver. I, for instance, need to control my main computer, a local fileserver, and a test machine all from the same input station.

ATake's KVM is a 4 port variety that's somewhat modernized. Instead of using typical PS/2 connectors, each computer is controlled using a VGA plug and a single USB cable (which replaces the mouse and keyboard). Keep in mind that the controlling keyboard and mouse are still PS/2; rather it's the outgoing cables that are USB-only. While this is a step in the right direction older hardware may have issues, particularly motherboards without USB keyboard support. Mice also have potential issues, but fortunately there's a workaround.

This is one of those products that's hard to use "wrong". You're provided with the KVM, 4 sets of cables, and a manual. Our cables had what appeared to be either burn marks or signs of aging. They still work perfectly though as it's only a cosmetic shortcoming. We hope it's not a widespread issue. It's pretty easy to figure out how the thing works, but there are a few caveats that require explanation. The main problem is getting it to switch computers using hot keys instead of the onboard switch button.

On most KVMs this is done by tapping the Scroll Lock button twice in rapid succession; however ATake's model requires an optional 3rd key to be used, something you'd never find out without probing through the manual which is unfortunately all in Chinese (or some other form of Asian; I honestly can't tell). On a brighter note, the foldout does have visual representations of the buttons so it's not terribly difficult to figure out.

These days there are two main layouts for KVM switches. The more traditional method is having all the ports on one side (the rear) while having activity LEDs and a button switch up front. This is probably the most space efficient. The EasyView takes a more contemporary approach by having the console ports on either end, with a pair of additional port sets on each side. The advantage to this is that it's easier to figure out what's hooked up to what, but it also requires more desktop space as wires will be running all over the place. Another oddity is the location of the ports. Instead of going in a circle (1,2,3,4), they're oriented in a criss-cross fashion (1,2,4,3). While not really a problem, this does cause a bit of confusion when hooking up the various computers. The specifications are as follows:
