SteelSeries QcK & QcK+ Mouse Pads PDF Print E-mail

Thanks to SteelSeries for the product samples.

Mouse pads, mouse pads, mouse pads. Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. As one of the only computer accessories that doesn't beg for an upgrade every few months, a mouse pad investment should be a smart one. Although there's no need to drop a day's pay on one, it deserves a bit more attention than a sheet of paper or a piece of cardboard. Today we'll be taking a look at a couple of SteelSeries' "professional gaming" surfaces to see how they stack up.

SteelSeries (interchangeable with Steelpad) offers both cloth and hard surface pads. The cloth QcK series has four models of varying sizes. The smallest of the bunch, the QcK Mini measures 9.8" x 8.3". Next up is the QcK (pictured in the box above) which comes in at 12.6" x 11.2". The QcK+ debuts at 17.7" x 15.7". They all measure 2mm in thickness with the exception of the final pad - the QcK Heavy which is 6mm thick to make up for uneven surfaces.

Being a little over an inch from square, the QcK is a near perfect size as far as mainstream pads go. It's particularly good for low sensitivity settings where major movements aren't very prevalent. It's pictured above with a slightly oversized Logitech MX1000. The logo is in the bottom left and all the corners are well rounded to give it some class and prevent frilling. Unfortunately this is the old logo, but it's not that big a deal.

The QcK, like other competing cloth surfaces, is comprised of three layers. The top is a thin piece of cloth, the bottom is ridged rubber to prevent slipping, and in-between all that is a foamy cushion to absorb shock and provide comfort. Rings a bell anyone? If you remember, just a few days ago we reviewed XtracPads' Ripper XXL, a cloth pad similar in design to the QcK. As a matter of fact, with the exception of size, thickness, logo design, and amount of corner rounding, they're nearly identical.

So I decided to compare them side by side. On the left is the QcK, on the right the XXL. As you can see the cloth patterns on the top are very similar.

The rubber backing is almost the same as well. Again QcK on the left, XXL on the right.
