Idle (Low Speed Fan):

On idle the temperature averaged 37C. This is identical to the heatpipe Thermalright XP-90 we tested in our fan comparison. It's a very quiet and cool solution, and impressive given that Swiftech doesn't use phase change materials in their line of heatsinks.
Load (Low Speed Fan):

On load the temperature jumped up to 50C (13C rise). This is 4C higher than the same fan on an XP-90. The difference here is most likely the fan (although this is pure speculation). Since the base is so thick and there's no heatpipe to better transfer the heat all over the cooler, more airflow (and therefore higher air pressure) is necessary to cool the base.
Idle (High Speed Fan):

Using the high speed Delta the idle temperature was one degree lower at 36C. This is once again identical to the performance of Thermalright's XP-90.
Load (High Speed Fan):

Unlike the low speed fan, here the temperature averaged 46C, the same as the XP-90. There's one conclusion to draw from this: Swiftech's MCX478-V doesn't perform as well as the XP-90 when using a low speed fan. However, when equipped with a higher output model it's on par. Once again, this is a noteworthy accomplishment given that Swiftech's cooler doesn't utilize heatpipe technology. At the same time, we recommend the company to at least consider releasing a model that makes use of this.
Pros
- Complete kit
- Unique design
- Accommodates both 80mm and 92mm fans
- Very high quality build
- Flat, well polished base
- Fits perfectly inside P4 bracket
- Great performance using a higher speed fan
Cons
- Less than ideal fan installation method
- Rigid clips (require a screwdriver)
- Can't install the heatsink if a 92mm fan is already mounted on it
- Mediocre load performance with low speed fan
Swiftech's MCX478-V is one of the best hybrid, non-heatpipe coolers you can get. When equipped with a high speed fan, its performance is on par with other enthusiast heatsinks such as the XP-90. However, it doesn't fare as well with low speed fans and we urge Swiftech to strongly consider a heatpipe solution. If interested, you can find a list of resellers here.
