The base is flawless. It's polished to a mirror finish, so any extra lapping is totally unnecessary. I'll let the photograph speak for itself. Note that the base is oversized and the two screws are well outside the CPU "landing zone" so they won't cause any thermal interference.

Before installing the GT-1000 you'll need to make a few preparations depending on the platform you'll be using it on. In any case, you'll have to remove the mini-heatsink via the pair of screws in the base.

If you plan on using it with a K7 processor, you'll have to first install the provided copper shim for safety (wouldn't want any cracked cores). You'll then need to add the provided 3-clip bracket to the mini-heatsink before screwing it back into the cooler.

And you end up with something like this. Since the GT-1000 is symmetrical it doesn't matter which way the clip initially faces so long as you install it properly on the motherboard later.

For a K8 system the procedure is about the same. This time there's no shim, but you will need to insert the special bracket into the mini-heatsink.
