Games used to be better in the old days when gameplay was king and graphics were functional:

Breakout - 1976
Actually, I never played breakout as it was created years before I was born. My first contact with a breakout clone was Arkanoid II:

Arkanoid 2 - 1987
And I absolutely hated it. I failed to see the attraction of hitting bricks with a ball and getting that last brick always annoyed me immensely, so I never played it beyond the first few levels.
My second experience is FizzBall, by Grubby Games, the creators of Professor Fizzwizzle. Ordering the game is simple point & click via the website. You can select which OS you will run the game on. Payment options include credit card, wire transfer and Paypal. After payment you receive a download link for (in the case of the Linux version) the full game in a tar file. In Ubuntu simply extract the file and run the game from a terminal. You may have problems running it in a 64-bit environment, specifically with the fmod libraries. After starting you are greeted by:

The opening screen which redefines the meaning of cuteness. Play Now! gives you the option to play in either Kids or Regular mode, after which you get the island group selection, from which the mathematically unimpaired can deduce that there are 7 islands to play through. Select the West Islands.
