Finally we have the anti-crash which allows for three options: terminating suspicious tasks, restarting the Windows shell and enabling crash recovery quick keys. This really only works if a program or combination of programs decides to hog all your Windows resources. Running the crash recovery terminates those suspicious processes and recovers CPU resources as well as restarting some of the more critical Windows functions. This will not, however, be of any use should something serious stop responding causing the entire system to lock up.

One of the more appealing features (at least to me) also happens to be the least noticeable. When running SpeedUpMyPC there's a simple icon located located in the task bar which shows you CPU, RAM and bandwidth usage. Exact values can be seen when you hover over it with your mouse. Double clicking launches the screen with all the options we've been discussing up to this point.

So with the feature set out of the way, what does it all amount to? Depends on what you're looking for. The CPU usage screen helps in overall stability and keeps a specified program prioritized. However, this only comes into play when CPU usage is at a maximum, which doesn't happen very often and certainly doesn't stay that way for prolonged periods of time for most users. But if you're rendering an animation, per se, while trying to run CS at the same time, you might experience some choppiness unless you make SpeedUpMyPC put your game up front.

Free RAM in the memory category is probably the most helpful out of this program. It's always good to free up memory before running a demanding application. And you'd be surprised how much can be freed up by simply running a 5 second test. Having it run automatically past a certain point can be a blessing at times but a curse at others. For instance, going back to CS, somewhere in the game memory usage will most likely get past a reasonably set limit for auto recovery, at which point SpeedUpMyPC comes to the front of the screen and runs the test.

This has a tendency to seriously mess up the game, most notably killing the audio and requiring a restart. So with some applications it may not be such a hot idea. But it's great when your memory usage goes way up for no apparent reason and stays there. Again, your mileage may very as the combination of software and hardware impacts the outcome. I can say, however, that for me internet loading times have improved noticeably after I ran that optimization. The startup menu also helps. But it seems to me that major improvements don't happen on already "optimized" systems.

If there aren't any unnecessary programs running, if you didn't make the mistake of installing AOL which plasters itself all over your hard drive, then there's not much for the program to do. And it's not flawed either, as the last screenshot shows. There I was running RAM recovery over and over until my usage went from about 70% down to 26% or so. So I go get some food, only to come back and find SpeedUpMyPC, the anti-crash program, crashing on me. Not much one can do at that point. The whole rant comes down to this: it's a good program for everyone to have, but only great for the average user.

When I first bought my Dell Inspiron 8200, I was greeted by five or so media players, when all I wanted was one. Along with about ten icons in the taskbar. And this is what most people deal with oblivious to the fact that they're only using about 10% of the programs running on their machine. SpeedUpMyPC is designed for people like that. It doesn't have many advanced settings and there isn't much documentation on what the "optimize" functions actually do. Furthermore, freebie programs out there can do much of the same, though you'd be hard pressed to find one which bring it all together in such a simple and, dare I say, user-friendly way.

Pros
  • Does what it's supposed to
  • Could potentially show big improvements
  • Very easy to use and understand
Cons
  • May or may not improve performance much
  • Boxed version somewhat pricey
  • Freeware programs do much of the same
But it really all comes down to price. Is it worth $50? Or more realistically, $30? I'd say the latter is manageable. Unless your PC is loaded with spyware and you haven't reformatted in years, you probably won't see lighting fast improvements. SpeedUpMyPC is not a miracle, but it does work and some things are quite apparent. I know I'll be using it on my machines. Once again I'd like to thank LIUtilities for sending over this piece of software and if interested you can get yours here. Thanks for reading and enjoy the site!
