Project Rebirth - Part 1 PDF Print E-mail

Product samples purchased from various locations.

For years the beige computer case has been the staple of any system, with the movement towards premodded cases only occurring recently. This project article keeps that in mind, as many people have a beige case sitting around gathering dust or holding a system. The goal of Project Rebirth was to take a usual, run of the mill beige ATX mid-tower case and transform it into a custom modded case complete with a high quality finish.

The case itself is an Antec SX-600 series that I have owned for over a year now. The remnants of a vinyl dye mod are visible on the drive bay covers in the front bezel and the plainness of the case is evident. When looking at the case it is helpful to form a plan, which should be the first step of any mod project you begin. The plan for the Antec is to add a side window and a high quality paint finish. Once you've settled on what to do, the next step is to gather all of the necessary materials and tools that are needed for the project.

Materials
  • 3x rolls 3M masking tape
  • 2x cans green Rustoleum enamel spray paint
  • 1x can white Rustoleum enamel spray paint
  • 1x can white lacquer spray paint
  • 1x can silver spray paint
  • Clear window
  • 3ft chrome window molding
  • 400 grit sandpaper
  • Newspaper
Tools
  • Dremel rotary tool
  • Reinforced cut-off wheels
  • Grinding stones
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Hex driver
  • .093 molex extractor

The next step is to take the case apart into all of its components. Simply remove the side panels and front bezel in the normal manner. Everything must be stripped from the case including PCI slot covers, brass motherboard standoffs, all case screws, and the snap-in fan mounts that make Antec cases so popular.

Once you get it stripped down to the bare chassis you will want to clean it thoroughly. As you can see in the picture after a year of use there was quite a bit of dust buildup both inside the case and on the chassis itself. A stiff wire brush is perfect for cleaning the interior, followed by a wipe down using a cotton towel. Pay careful attention to any nooks and crannies that can house dust. It is important to remove all of the dust so that the paint has a clean surface to adhere to.
