OCZ EL PC3700/PC3500 Basic Series DDR PDF Print E-mail

Thanks to OCZ Technology for the product sample.

In the last year, the computer hardware part that has been improved on most of all, besides CPU, video card and motherboard chipset, has been computer memory. If in early 2002 we had DDR333 as the latest achievement; now we see a lot of manufacturers release their DDR433 or PC3500 and even DDR466 (PC3700), or even DDR500 aka PC4000! And now that JEDEC has finally approved the standard for DDR400 (just when Intel needed DDR-I 400), things will get even more interesting. The limits of DDR-I technology will continue to be pushed farther and farther, especially since DDR-II memory isn't going to become mainstream very soon.

Although DDR400 standard was just approved by JEDEC, the unofficial versions of DDR400 and even DDR433 memory modules have been on the market for quite some time now. At first, they were nothing more than overclocked DDR333 chips placed on a better PCB, but early last year 5ns chips, which correspond to DDR400 speed (200MHz real working frequency) were launched, so most memory manufacturers were quick to use them in their DDR400 modules and even in their DDR433 modules. One of the companies that is becoming more popular with the enthusiast's crowd is OCZ Technology.

OCZ is a relatively new company. It was founded in August 2000 and is aimed at the hardware enthusiasts and, of course, overclockers. OCZ makes not only RAM, but also coolers, and their Gladiator series for socket A has been quite successful. Anyway, the subject, or should I say subjects of today's review are some RAM sticks made by OCZ, namely the EL DDR PC3700 and the PC3500 Basic. Let's start with the latter. Like all other OCZ RAM modules it comes in a retail package, which includes the module itself and a small installation guide, all nicely packed in a transparent plastic box:

It's pretty neat and when you open up the pack, besides an odor of fresh electronics you'll find the module:

The physical appearance of the module is nice, not very eye candy but nice. The big copper heat spreader makes the module very heavy, it's nice to have it because at high speeds, with high voltages, the chips can get pretty hot. Not to mention that the heat spreader also acts as a shield and protects the RAM from any physical damage. The heatsink is engraved with the OCZ logo, which not only looks cool, but also guarantees that it's an original OCZ module and not some sort of cheap replica. Also, the OCZ heat spreader is better than the ones other manufacturers use, because the copper makes contact with all the memory chips due to the very strong clips. Those are so tight that when I tried removing the heat spreader I barely budged the darn clips. The specifications for the PC3500 Basic RAM are as follows (taken directly from OCZ's site):

So, the RAM is rated DDR433/PC3500 with CAS 2.5 7-3-3 2T timings, but the voltage isn't mentioned. My guess is the RAM works best at 2.60V, but since OCZ does not specify, I can't be sure. Voltage is very important for people with boards that don't allow VDDR above 2.70V, but then again those boards are not really for overclockers, so try to check the board's maximal memory voltage before you choose it or before you choose the RAM for it.
